“Try Not. Do. Or Do Not. There is No Try.”

“Try not. Do.  Or do not.  There is no try.”

When you are faced with a challenge that seems insurmountable, what is your attitude?  Is it that you will merely “try” to overcome the obstacle? Maybe, like Luke Skywalker of Stars Wars fame, you need to “unlearn” an attitude  that success for you would be impossible.  If you set goals for 2012 (and I hope you did) can you truthfully say you have given 100% of your energy and passion to accomplishment of those goals?  Or have you merely “tried”?

Maybe you remember the movie, The Empire Strikes Back, the second of the first trilogy of Star Wars movies.  I love this scene where the X-wing fighter has sunk, and only the tip of its nose shows above the lake’s surface.

Yoda is emphatic to Luke’s protest that this challenge is “different”.  Yoda counsels, “No! No different! Only different in your mind. You must unlearn what you have learned.”

Luke resignedly gives in and says,  “All right, I’ll give it a try.”

And this is where we get the famous line from Yoda that Star Wars fans may remember and still quote:

“Try not. Do. Or do not.  There is no try!”

To proclaim to “try” is taking the attitude that seems to say  some feeble attempt might be made.  Why not start today with a new attitude and a new mentality that you neither WILL or WILL NOT accomplish the goals you have set for 2012.  Take the “try” out of your thinking and either do it – or do not.  There is no try!

On a personal note, the “force” I rely on is this:  “……..I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”  Matthew 17:20.

Have you been guilty of saying you will “try” to reach specific goals you have set for your life or business? What new attitude could you acquire today which would propel you toward accomplishment of your goals?

I love this particular blog Louise…..especially the verse you included. I use to have a picture of a hand holding a palm full of mustard seeds with that same verse on my computer desk top……so often, I know with me, we tend to lack the faith that is needed to move that mountain.

I have set goals for 2012 – I am staying postive and working hard to achieve my goals. I believe success is possible but you do have to have a passion to accomplish your goals!

And you WILL achieve your goals!

I agree Sherri! Passion, hard work and surrounding yourself around positivity!

Famous words of my 11 year old daughter when asked to do something that I’ve asked of her over and over is “I’ll try to remember next time” in which I replay, “don’t just try, make a conscious effort and do it”. However, I am just as guilty of setting goals and saying I’ll try to get this or that accomplished and then rationalize it in my head on why it never got done. I need to “unlearn” this behavior and be a better example and achieve what I set out to do. I choose to be a Jedi Master!

      Great example, Wendy! Love it!

The saying “Bad habits are the hardest to unlearn then good habits” fits perfectly here. If we do not put our full hearts into accomplishing our goals, then what is the purpose of those goals. Might has well send those goals to the darkside. To become a jedi master you have to reach your goals. As Yoda also said, ” The Force is strong with this one.” Are you ready to be a jedi master or are you going to join the darkside?

Love it, Brian! Your comment could be a blog post (I may have to do that!). Choosing to be a jedi master or joining the dark side – what a choice, huh?!

It is a choice that everyone has to make. Especially when temptation arises. Go for it, I think it would be a blog post that everyone would like to read.
